Alisa Solomon: Wonder of Wonders: A Cultural History of Fiddler on the Roof

Alisa Solomon teaches at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where she directs the Arts & Culture concentration in the MA program. A former theater critic and cultural and political reporter for the Village Voice, she has also contributed to many publications, such as the New York Times, Tablet, and The Forward. She is a winner of the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism.

Wonder of Wonders: A Cultural History of Fiddler on the Roof is a story of the theater, following Tevye the milkman from his humble appearance on the New York Yiddish stage, to his Broadway debut, and his ultimate destination— a major Hollywood picture. The book explores how and why Fiddler was reborn as blockbuster entertainment and a cultural touchstone, not only for Jews and not only in America. It reveals the legacy of a show about tradition that itself became a tradition. Austin Jewish Repertory Theater will perform Fiddler in collaboration with Trinity Street Players this August.
