American Red Cross Training and Certifications 

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification 
Ages 15 Yrs+  

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This class will certify the participant in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and Bloodborne Pathogen Training. The Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR-PR, and Oxygen Administration are two year certifications and the Bloodborne Pathogen certification must be renewed each year.

In order to participate in this class you must pass a pre-course which consists of a 300 yard continuous swim using front crawl and/or breaststroke, tread water for two minutes using only your legs, and a timed event which includes swimming 20 yards, picking up a 10 lb brick from the bottom of 7-10 feet of water and swimming it back to the side keeping both hands on the brick. The participant MUST attend all class sessions in order to pass.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Review (Recertification)
Ages 15 Yrs+   

This class will re-certify the participant in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and Bloodborne Pathogen Training. The Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR-PR, and Oxygen Administration are two year certifications and the Bloodborne Pathogen certification must be renewed each year.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification
Ages 16 Yrs+  

The purpose of this instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program including Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn -to- Swim, Adult Swim, Private Lessons, Water Safety Courses (including Safety Training for Swim Coaches*) and Water Safety Presentations.

In order to participate in this class you must pass a pre-course which consists of performing the following swimming skills to a Level 4 ability: 25 yards of Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, and Sidestroke. 15 yards of Butterfly, maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling), and tread water for 1 minute. The participant MUST attend all class sessions in order to pass.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Course
Ages 17+

Become certified to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens classes. This course prepares instructor candidates to use course and presentation materials, conduct training sessions and evaluate the progress of candidates in a professional-level course. Candidates must be currently certified as a lifeguard.

In order to participate in this class you must pass the Prerequisite Swimming Skills Evaluation (which is the same as the one in a basic lifeguarding class) and prerequisite Rescue Skill Scenarios Evaluation (each candidate completes four rescue scenarios).

*There is a $37 non-refundable American Red Cross fee for the online pre-course.
