The Torch Project "Or M'Dor L'Dor"
Light from Generation to Generation

Shalom Austin (formerly the JCAA) and The Education Task force of Partnership2Gether in the Western Galilee (and part of the Jewish Agency for Israel) Is delighted to share with the community  The Torch Project, "Or M'dor L'Dor"- Light from Generation to Generation!

The torches represent gifts we have received from previous generations and gifts we are passing on to future generations.  Members from our Partnership communities in the USA, the Western Galilee, Israel and Budapest, Hungary established the project. The Austin community is excited to participate.  We have torches from all over the Austin community including these organizations:

Austin Jewish Academy      Early Childhood Program at Shalom Austin
Congregation Beth Israel     Congregation Agudas Achim
Congregation Beth Shalom     Congregation Shir Ami
Congregation Tiferet     UT Hillel
KESHET Austin     Omaha (One of our Partnership cities)

Why Torches? Passing a torch is a symbol of a strong value in Judaism of passing the heritage from generation to generation. In the Passover "Hagada" we repeat on the value of "Vehigadeta Levincha" – telling the story to your son. Judaism is based on the written and verbal Torah (rules, costumes, traditional stories etc.) which have been passed from generation to generation.
