How the US State Department Fights Back Against Antisemitism

Thursday, March 12, 2020 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Shalom Austin, in conjunction with CTI’s Israel Action Committee and the Austin ADL, is pleased to present Ellie Cohanim, US Department of State Deputy Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism.

Ellie Cohanim serves as Deputy Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism. As Deputy Special Envoy, she helps inform and carry out policies and related initiatives that aim to counter global anti-Semitism. She has an extensive background fighting anti-Semitism and promoting religious equality based on her decades of advocacy, policy development, and journalism and public speaking work.

Prior to serving as Deputy Special Envoy, Ms. Cohanim held senior roles with the Jewish Broadcasting Service (JBS), a national Jewish television network. She was most recently Senior Vice President and a Special Correspondent handling on-air reporting. Ms. Cohanim’s vast media experience includes anchoring the broadcast of major international gatherings such as the AIPAC Policy Conference, the Jewish Federations’ General Assembly, events for the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, and dozens of other significant gatherings. Before that, she was an officer at Yeshiva University in New York.

Ms. Cohanim has served on the boards of the American Jewish Committee’s New York region, New York Jewish Community Relations Council, and the Ester Chapter of Hadassah, which recognized her as a “Young Leader” in 2010. Previously, she served on an array of non-profit boards that focus on educating and advocating for religious freedom and fairness both domestically and internationally. Ms. Cohanim arrived as a child refugee to the US, after she and her family fled the escalating Anti-Semitism in Iran during the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Ms. Cohanim received her B.A. in Political Science, Cum Laude, from Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City. She has done graduate study in International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is also a graduate of the Muehlstein Institute for Jewish Professional Leadership/NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Ms. Cohanim is fluent in Hebrew and Farsi.
