UT Talk: Dr. Amy K. Kaminsky
November 7 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pmFree
The story of the Jewish gaucho is one of the foundational myths of Jewish Argentineity, originally deployed to persuade Argentina that Jews had a legitimate place in the nation. Nevertheless, the idea of the Jewish gaucho, tethered to reality by the fact of Argentina’s Jewish agricultural settlements and immigrant Jews’ interactions with a rural population that included actual gauchos, has long been interrogated and has often been contested by Jewish writers and thinkers. Amy Kaminsky will discuss both the appeal of the idea of the Jewish gaucho and the fissures within and between “Jew” and “gaucho” that make the construct so difficult to maintain.
