UT Talk: Dr. Ilana Szobel

November 1 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

This talk explores the socio-poetic articulation of sexualized violence in modern Hebrew literature and Israeli culture. One cannot deny the tremendous achievements of the feminist movement and the many ways in which it has enriched and broadened the critical discussion of gender-based violence. Prof. Szobel argues that while the current writings from survivors representing sexual aggression have significantly undermined patriarchal conventions and reduced the effectiveness of silencing techniques in Israeli society, at the same time, its dominance may overshadow or stifle other experiences of sexual abuse victims. Thus, her talk considers the ways in which expectations around the form of “proper” or “appropriate” feminist speech—in which victims are encouraged by wider society to articulate their trauma as the sole means of overcoming or coping with it—have become a more pervasive form of oppression in the current Israeli discourses around sexual violence.
