After his mother sends him to Israel under false pretenses\, Schlomo arrives posing as a Jewish orphan. Taken in by a liberal Jewish family\, he bears the burden of living a lie and struggling with racism\, while navigating love\, family\, and belonging. Three superb actors portray Schlomo at different ages\, with Yaël Abecassis poignantly playing his adoptive mother. Writer-director Radu Mihăileanu’s emotionally charged exploration of immigration\, assimilation\, and self-identity won the French Best Screenplay César\, the Berlinale Audience Award and Ecumenical Jury Prize.\n\n\nWHY WE LIKE THIS FILM: Celebrating the season of freedom this film is first and foremost a great drama\, but it also explores a number of interesting themes—freedom (especially the escape from famine and poverty)\, identity\, acceptance\, the treatment of migrants\, and so much more that is still very timely. For those celebrating Easter\, there are also interesting ideas of redemption and rebirth. This is just one of the many great films available on ChaiFlicks.

SUMMARY:Pirkei Avot Study (Congregation Shalom Rav)
DESCRIPTION:Pirkei Avot is a tractate in the Mishnah. From at least the time of Saadia Gaon (10th century)\, it has been customary to study one chapter a week between Passover and Shavuot; we will follow that tradition from 20 April – 1 June\, 2025. Weekly\, Sundays 9:30 – 10:30 am. Led by Ya’akov Love. Via Zoom.\nPirkei Avot (“Ethics of Our Fathers”) contains almost no laws\, consisting instead of short statements of advice\, ethics\, and wisdom. The first chapter outlines the stages of the transmission of the Oral Torah\, beginning with Moses at Mount Sinai and continuing through the prophets and sages. The next four chapters contain statements of rabbinic sages\, largely in chronological order. The last chapter focuses on the merits of Torah study.  We will use Sefaria as our primary source text\, supplemented by traditional and modern commentaries – including excerpts from The Baal Shem Tov on Pirkey Avoth.  An Introduction doc and Brief Biographies of the Sages with chronological timeline is provided for reference.

DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day)\, Lucy Taus Katz along with\nCongregation Havurah Shalom of Sun City\, Texas and in partnership with the Georgetown Public Library have created a thought-provoking and inspiring program titled “The Heroes of a Hidden Child: One Survivor’s Story of Gratitude” This program will take place at The Georgetown Public Library’s Hewlett Room\, located at 402 West 8th Street in\nGeorgetown\, Texas on Sunday\, April 27th 2025 from 3-5pm. The event is FREE and all are welcome. \nLucy Taus Katz’s life is a story of survival against impossible odds. Born into a Jewish family in Nazi-occupied Europe\, Lucy was just an infant when her family faced the horrors of the Holocaust. While much of her large extended family perished\, Lucy’s life was spared through the extraordinary acts of kindness and bravery of strangers. These individuals\nrisked their own lives—and those of their families—to protect a child they had never met\, embodying humanity at its most courageous. \nPresented by Lucy Taus Katz herself\, this program promises a unique insight into the extraordinary acts of courage\, resilience\, and humanity that persisted amidst one of history’s darkest periods. Through her words\, Lucy emphasizes the power of kindness\, forgiveness\, and resilience to heal and transform individuals and communities. She reminds us that we all have the ability to make a difference\, one person at a time\, in repairing the world.

Our evening Honorees are Carol & Dr. Kaylen Silverberg. \nCarol and Kaylen are longtime leaders in the Austin community. They are the voice to support and stand for Israel. They strive to find creative ways to bring Israel’s complexity to different communities. One of their most exciting projects is the Interactive Wall they created at Shalom Austin’s facility. This is the only Interactive Wall at all the JCCs across the US. This wall is an amazing opportunity for our community to get educated about Israel and advocate for Israel. Through their hard work and contributions\, great energy\, and very humble way of doing things\, they are role models to us in the community. \nIAC’s mission centers around fostering a deep connection to Israel\, promoting Jewish identity\, and combating antisemitism through innovative programs and events. We support individuals and families in discovering their cultural heritage and connecting with their roots\, ensuring a vibrant Jewish future. For the past 18 years\, IAC has been a powerful voice for Israel and the Jewish people\, fostering pride\, unity\, and impact from coast to coast. One such impactful initiative is our IAC SHIELD\, an initiative that was established to support Jewish students\, staff\, and faculty who are experiencing antisemitism\, harassment\,  and discrimination across U.S and Canadian campuses. We will hear more about that at our event.
