SUMMARY:AJFF presents "Midas Man"
DESCRIPTION:When Brian Epstein set foot in the Cavern Club in November 1961 to watch The Beatles perform\, he saw something no one else could – a glimmer of gold. Sharply dressed and well-spoken\, Brian was hardly the most obvious radical – but being Jewish\, closeted and having grown up as an outsider who had failed at pretty much everything\, he was a 26-year old with something to prove and who wanted to tear up the rulebook.

SUMMARY:AJFF presents: "The New Jew: Days of War"
DESCRIPTION:Israeli comedian Guri Alfi embarks on a journey to explore the profound impact of October 7th on the identity\, security\, and status of Jews in the United States. Through intimate personal stories—from families of hostages and individuals confronting rising antisemitism to young Jews grappling with intergenerational divides on Israel—the film makes these complex issues accessible to a broader audience. It delves into key developments after October 7th\, including the isolation felt by many American Jews\, the rise in hate crimes\, and the growing quest for renewed belonging within their communities. Guided by Guri Alfi’s signature mix of empathy and humor\, the film masterfully balances deep emotional resonance with moments of levity\, offering a message of hope in challenging times. This film serves as a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2021 TV miniseries The New Jew\, which earned widespread praise in Israel and at film festivals across the United States.

SUMMARY:AJFF Presents: "Mazel Tov"
DESCRIPTION:When Dario Roitman returns from the U.S. to Argentina for a family wedding and Bat Mitzvah\, he anticipates the usual family drama. But his carefully laid plans for a family reunion are suddenly upended when he learns\, just hours before his flight\, that his father has passed away. As the Roitmans gather for the funeral\, old wounds resurface and longstanding tensions reach a boiling point. Despite the emotional turmoil\, Dario remains determined to celebrate both the wedding and Bat Mitzvah\, even if it means challenging tradition and risking further discord. Navigating grief\, sibling rivalry\, and delightfully eccentric grudges\, the Roitmans reveal the messy yet enduring love of family.

SUMMARY:AJFF Presents: Live and Become (FREE!)
DESCRIPTION:The anguished saga of an Ethiopian boy airlifted to Israel during the 1980s Operation Moses to escape persecution and famine\, unfolds in this sweeping epic. After his mother sends him to Israel under false pretenses\, Schlomo arrives posing as a Jewish orphan. Taken in by a liberal Jewish family\, he bears the burden of living a lie and struggling with racism\, while navigating love\, family\, and belonging. Three superb actors portray Schlomo at different ages\, with Yaël Abecassis poignantly playing his adoptive mother. Writer-director Radu Mihăileanu’s emotionally charged exploration of immigration\, assimilation\, and self-identity won the French Best Screenplay César\, the Berlinale Audience Award and Ecumenical Jury Prize.\n\n\nWHY WE LIKE THIS FILM: Celebrating the season of freedom this film is first and foremost a great drama\, but it also explores a number of interesting themes—freedom (especially the escape from famine and poverty)\, identity\, acceptance\, the treatment of migrants\, and so much more that is still very timely. For those celebrating Easter\, there are also interesting ideas of redemption and rebirth. This is just one of the many great films available on ChaiFlicks.

SUMMARY:AJFF Presents: "A Photographic Memory"
DESCRIPTION:Sheila Turner Seed was an award-winning New York City-based\, journalist in the 1970s who interviewed such photography luminaries as Henri Cartier-Bresson\, Gordon Parks\, Cecil Beaton\, and Lisette Model. When she passed away suddenly and tragically\, she left behind an infant daughter\, Rachel. More than 30 years later\, Rachel has herself become a filmmaker\, photographer\, and writer. A Photographic Memory marks a moving attempt to navigate grief and nostalgia as Rachel deep-dives into Shelia’s archives\, much of which had been forgotten.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHY WE LIKE THIS FILM: Brought to our attention by Phil Spertus\, who knew Sheila Turner Seed\, this film is a beautifully made and touching story of her daughter\, Rachel trying to understand and connect with the mother she never got to know. Rachel is expected to travel to Austin for a post screening Q&A.
