SUMMARY:Wise Aging
DESCRIPTION:There is no set of instructions for getting older\, join Rabbi Cohen as we open up conversations about what it means not just to get older but to age wisely. Based on the book Wise Aging\, written by Rabbi Rachel Cowan\, of blessed memory\, and Dr. Linda Thal\, both pioneers in transforming Jewish communal life to include spirituality and spiritual development\, the book is grounded in Jewish mindfulness and spiritual practices. Wise Aging provides a road-map for the journey we are all on. Together we will explore a wide range of issues including relationships with adult children and spouses; body image; romance and sexuality; living with loss; and cultivating well-being. Wise Aging and is especially relevant for individuals 55 and better\, but this group is open to all! \nThe Wise Aging Book is included in the program fees. \nRegister here. \n

SUMMARY:Death Over Donuts
DESCRIPTION:Our uniting truth is that every single one of us will die. Despite this fact\, our culture shies away from acknowledging it\, making everything—from discussions on end-of-life medical wishes to expressions of what we want our memorial services to look like—feel morbid and sometimes downright scary. But these conversations don’t need to feel this way! Join us for an evening of discussion and connection around what it means to you to have a “good death.” What do you wish for yourself and for those you love most? What conversations can you be starting with loved ones today to ensure that they and you receive the care we all truly deserve at the end of our lives? All are welcome!

SUMMARY:What is Shmirah? Learn with Gail Tosto
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about Shmirah with Gail Tosto who is a Jewish end-of-life doula\, hospice volunteer\, chevrah kadisha (Jewish burial society) volunteer\, and founder of Austin Shmirah — a 250-member\, cross-denominational group of volunteers who perform shmirah (prayerful or mindful accompaniment between death and burial) for the deceased of all local congregations\, Chabad\, and the unaffiliated. She serves as one of its three Facilitators.  An active member of Congregation Agudas Achim\, she thrives on interactions with people from across the entire Jewish community. Gail is a retired multilingual translator and teaches “Hebrew Through Torah” through CAA’s Adult Education program.\n\nShmirah is the Jewish tradition of lovingly accompanying our deceased between death and burial. Austin Shmirah\, founded in 2010\, is a city-wide network of local Jewish congregations and individual volunteers performing shmirah for the deceased of all denominations\, including the unaffiliated. Each congregation autonomously chooses its own approach to shmirah. Each volunteer chooses how often to serve and with which congregation(s) to partner (as long as they meet the congregation’s requirements). Our cooperative\, cross-denominational model may be unique among Jewish communities. Austin Shmirah has been called the most effective large-city\, all-volunteer shmirah-scheduling system in the United States. Gail Tosto\, our speaker for this event\, is the founder of Austin Shmirah and currently serves as one of its Co-Facilitators.

SUMMARY:Death Over Dinner-Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Bring you own Dinner and join the Jewish Family Service Grief & Loss team at Death Over Dinner. \n\nOur uniting truth is that every single one of us will die. \nLink will be emailed to registered participants.
