Preschool Lessons (3-5 yrs)

The primary objective of the American Red Cross Preschool Aquatic Program is to promote the developmentally appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills by young children. Each session is 30 minutes and we always maintain a low 3:1 ratio.

LEVEL 1

The objective of this American Red Cross class is to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Students will learn elementary aquatic skills which students will build on as they progress through the levels developing positive attitudes and safe practices in, on, and around the water.

  • Entering and exiting the water safely from the ramp, steps, and side of the pool
  • Submerge mouth and nose while blowing bubbles for 5 seconds
  • Floating with assistance on the front for 5 seconds and back for 10 seconds
  • Glide with assistance on front
  • Glide with support on back for 2 body lengths
  • Rollovers with assistance from front to back and back to front
  • Kick on front with assistance - flutter kicks
  • Kick on back with support - flutter and whip kicks
  • Paddle on front with support
  • Finning arms on back with support

 

LEVEL 2

The objective of this American Red Cross class is to further develop basic aquatic skills. This course marks the beginning of independent aquatic locomotion skills. Students learn to float with assistance and to recover to a vertical position as well as exploring simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back.

  • Entering and exiting the water safely from the ramp, steps, and side of the pool
  • Submerge mouth and nose while blowing bubbles for 8 seconds
  • Floating independently on the front and back for 5 seconds 
  • Glide on front independently for 2 body lengths
  • Glide on back with assistance for 2 body lengths
  • Rollovers independently from front to back and back to front
  • Front glide 2 body lengths, then rollover to back float for 5 seconds, independently
  • Combined arm and leg action on the front w/ assistance
  • Kick on front independently for 2 body lengths – Flutter kicks
  • Front crawl arms with assistance
  • Combined arm and leg action on the back w/ assistance
  • Kick on back with assistance – flutter and whip kicks
  • Finning arms on back with assistance

LEVEL 3

The objective of this American Red Cross class is to build on the skills learned in previous levels by providing additional guided practice. Students will be performing skills independently while learning to coordinate the front & back crawl as well as being introduced to treading water.

  • Entering and exiting the water safely from the ramp, steps, and side of the pool
  • Submerge mouth and nose while blowing bubbles for 10 seconds
  • Pick up a submerged object from bottom
  • Floating independently on the front for 10 seconds and back for 15 seconds
  • Glide independently on front and back for 3 body lengths
  • Rollover independently from front to back and back to front
  • Swim on front 5 body lengths, then rollover to back float for 15 seconds, independently
  • Back float then rollover to swim on front 5 body lengths, independently
  • Front crawl independently for 5 body lengths
  • Back crawl independently for 5 body lengths
  • Elementary backstroke independently for 5 body lengths
