School of Dance Event Calendar

The mission of the School of Dance at the J is to provide quality dance training in a positive, nurturing, environment. In addition to learning dance steps, proper stretching, good manners, and technique, students gain confidence as they master new skills. Dance classes are held in several different locations; see each individual class description for the location. All prices include classes, costume fee, and School of Dance t-shirt. Pick up and drop off is available for all enrolled ECP students. Pick up is available for all enrolled AJA students. Kids Connection provides pick up and drop off for all dance classes. On Sundays, pick up is available from Sunday school.

Ballet & Tap I Grade K

This combo class is designed for the child who is interested in developing their ballet and tap skills. In Ballet, students will focus on proper ballet technique and terminology, barre work, and center floor exercises. In Tap, students will begin with simple rhythms and sounds and progress to sequences and simple choreography. The class will be divided into two sections; thirty minutes of ballet followed by thirty minutes of tap. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Ballet & Tap II Grades 1-2

This combo class is designed for the child who is interested in developing their ballet and tap skills. In Ballet, students will focus on proper ballet technique and terminology, barre work, and center floor exercises. In Tap, students will begin with simple rhythms and sounds and progress to sequences and simple choreography. The class will be divided into two sections; thirty minutes of ballet followed by thirty minutes of tap. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Ballet & Tap III Grades 3-5

This combo class is designed for the child who is interested in developing their ballet and tap skills on an intermediate level. In Ballet, students will focus on proper ballet technique and terminology, barre work, and center floor exercises. In Tap, students will begin with intermediate rhythms and sounds and progress to sequences and more advanced choreography. The class will be divided into two sections; thirty-five minutes of ballet followed by thirty-five minutes of tap.  Meets in Aerobics Room.

Ballet & Tap IV Grades 6-8

In this intermediate/advanced level combo class, students will continue to improve upon their ballet and tap technique. In Ballet, students focus on proper technique, body alignment, flexibility, terminology, and center floor work. In Tap, students will master more complex rhythms and sounds, tap sequences and intermediate choreography. The class will be divided into two sections; fortyfive minutes of ballet followed by forty-five minutes of tap. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Broadway Tap & Jazz All Levels of Kids

This combo class is designed for the student who has a passion for the theatrical world and wants to develop their tap and jazz skills while listening to classic and modern musicals.  Meets in Aerobics Room.

Creative Movement Age 3

This class offers development in coordination, musical awareness, and listening skills while helping students implement their natural creativity. Each class is thematically based and students are led through a series of movement stories and dance games. The curriculum is designed to introduce these youngest students to dance in a structured and safe environment while enhancing the development of fine and gross motor skills. Students must be three years of age by January 1, 2012 and fully potty-trained. Meets in Aerobics Room.

The curriculum is designed to introduce these youngest students to dance in a structured and safe environment while enhancing the development of fine and gross motor skills. Students must be at least two years of age by January 1, 2012 and fully potty-trained.  Meets in the Hippo Room at ECP Village.

DanStarz Varsity & JV Grades 4-8

DanStarz is a performance based junior dance company. It is designed for the student who is ready to take their skills to new heights and focus on the production aspect of being a dancer. This is a high energy, fast paced, technical workshop to perfect dance movements, turns, leaps, and choreography. This troupe is designed to perform at JCC events, as well as inside and outside of the Austin community. To join DanStarz, students must audition and be accepted by a panel of judges. Other requirements include: be in 4th–8th grade, must have 2-3 years of dance technique, and maintain weekly attendance in at least one other dance class at the School of Dance at the J. DanStarz workshops were held in August 2011 for the current school year. DanStarz Varsity will meet on Fridays, 4-6 PM, in the Aerobics Room, DanStarz JV will meet on Sundays, 1-2:30 PM, in the Aerobics Room, and each member must attend at least one technique class a week, either on Sunday, 2:35-4 PM, in the Aerobics Room or on Wednesday, 6-7:30 PM, in the ECP Multi-purpose Room. Hip Hop I Grades 3-5

Hip Hop is a contemporary, fun, and energetic combination of street dance, funk, and jazz. This beginner/intermediate class will focus on basic dance steps, stretching, freestyle movement, floor work, and “tricks” utilizing up-beat pop and hip hop music. Aerobic endurance is a strong component for this style of dance. Meets in CAA Multi-Purpose Room.

Hip Hop II Grades 6-8

Hip Hop is a contemporary, fun, and energetic combination of street dance, funk, and jazz. This intermediate/advanced class will focus on intermediate dance steps, stretching, freestyle movement, floor work, and “tricks” utilizing up-beat pop and hip hop music. Aerobic endurance is a strong component for this style of dance. Meets in CAA Multi-Purpose Room.

Jazz Grades 3-5

Jazz is a mix of ballet and contemporary dance forms. This class is designed for the student looking to increase flexibility, freedom of movement, and build a strong core while dancing to the latest hits. This class meets in Room 150C. Meets in 150C.

Jazz & Hip Hop Grades 1-2

This combo class is designed for the student looking to increase flexibility, freedom of movement, and build a strong core while dancing to up-beat pop and hip hop music. Aerobic endurance is a strong component for this style of dance. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Kiddie Pop Ages 3-4 yrs

Kiddie Pop is designed for our youngest kids to move in a fun way by focusing on the popular urban and street culture style of dance that provides a funkier edge to the basic styles of dance. Students must be at least three years of age by January 1, 2012. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Kiddie Pop- ECP Village Ages 3-4 yrs

Kiddie Pop is designed for our youngest kids to move in a fun way by focusing on the popular urban and street culture style of dance that provides a funkier edge to the basic styles of dance. Students must be at least three years of age by January 1, 2012. Meets in Hippo Room at ECP Village.

Musical Theatre I Grade K

In this introduction to Musical Theatre, students will learn the basic Broadway style dance steps and how to bring a character to life. Students will stretch, turn, leap, and learn a short theatrical combination each class. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Musical Theatre II Grades 1-2

In this Musical Theatre course, students will continue to learn the basic Broadway style dance steps and how to bring a character to life. Students will stretch, turn, leap, and learn a short theatrical combination each class. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Musical Theatre III Grades 3-5

Musical Theatre III is designed to develop comprehensive musical theatre skills including theatre dance, partnering, acting, character development, and musical theatre history. In this intermediate level class, students will continue to build upon their flexibility, turns and leaps, and learn more intricate choreography. For more information, contact Meets in 150C.

Musical Theatre IV Grades 6-8

Musical Theatre IV is designed to develop comprehensive musical theatre skills including theatre dance, partnering, acting, character development, and musical theatre history. In this fast-paced intermediate/advanced level class, students will continue to build upon their flexibility, advanced turns and leaps, and learn more intricate and advanced choreography. Meets in CAA Multi-Purpose Room.

Pre-Ballet & Pre-Tap Age 4

This combo class is designed for the child who wishes to explore the wonderful world of ballet and tap. In Pre-Ballet, students are encouraged in their creativity but will begin to learn basic shapes, positions, postures, and traditions of classical ballet. In Pre-Tap, students will begin with simple rhythms and sounds and build timing and coordination. The class will be divided into two sections; thirty minutes of ballet followed by thirty minutes of tap. Students must be four years of age by January 1, 2012. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Tap IV Grades 6-8

Tap represents various rhythms made by movements of the feet. In this class, students will focus on rhythms and sounds, coordination and flexibility, and learning how to perform expressively. Through barre work, rhythm sequences, across the floor patterns, and intermediate/advanced choreography, students will continue to develop more complex tap skills. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Technique All Levels of Kids

This class is designed to help students with their overall dance technique. The focus will be to improve flexibility, master turns, leaps and jumps. Meets in Aerobics Room.

Two Much Fun Age 2

This creative movement class offers development in coordination, musical awareness, and listening skills while helping students implement their natural creativity. Props, dance games, ballet basic and imagination galore will be used to help these youngest students dance in a structured and safe environment while enhancing the development of fine and gross motor skills. Students must be two years of age by January 1, 2012 and fully potty-trained or wear a pull up under their tights. Meets in Aerobics Room.
