The Leslie Brittman Literary Event was held on Sunday, October 29 at Chez Zee. Jennifer Rosner, National Jewish Book Award Finalist, and author of “The Yellow Bird Sings” was interviewed by Rochelle Kraus (née Brittman) about her latest book “Once We Were Home.” Based on true stories, the book explores the lives of children hidden during World War II, and what happened to them after the war ended.

This novel raises thought-provoking questions about legacy, identity, how one defines family and home, and who is best suited to raise the children. Rochelle and Jennifer’s heartfelt and meaningful conversation was further enhanced by Lucy Katz sharing her personal story as a hidden child. An audience Q&A followed.

Every year, Shalom Austin hosts the Leslie Brittman Literary Event for the community to enjoy hearing from a featured author. The event was made possible by the generosity of the Leslie S. Brittman Literary Fund, named in honor of Marvin Brittman’s wife Leslie, who died of cancer in 2016. Leslie loved discussing books, sharing points of view, listening to, and learning to understand and empathize with another’s point of view, and creating community through these kinds of conversations. The Leslie S. Brittman Literary Fund exists to continue on her legacy and love through events like this one.
