Creating a Lasting Impact at the Shalom Austin Jewish Foundation

Marilyn Saikin Stahl creates a lasting legacy with Marilyn Saikin Stahl Sigma Delta Tau Leadership Endowment Fund at the Shalom Austin Jewish Foundation.

Two forces of nature and leadership in the Austin Jewish community will ensure a lasting legacy of inspiration and funding. The 60+ affiliation of Marilyn Stahl with the UT chapter of Sigma Delta Tau is celebrated with the creation of the Marilyn Saikin Stahl Sigma Delta Tau Leadership Endowment Fund at the Shalom Austin Jewish Foundation.

Sigma Delta Tau sorority at the University of Texas may not be the same Tau Chapter it was in the 1950s when Marilyn Saikin Stahl arrived in Austin to attend UT, but the chapter and its legacy continue to support Jewish life in Austin and at UT.

Marilyn’s leadership and involvement in the sorority inspired local Texas Sigma Delta Tau Educational Foundation board members, Randi Shade, Suzanne Newberg, Helen Gilbert, Dana Winer, Jennifer Melrose, and Andrea Sour, to establish the Marilyn Saikin Stahl Sigma Delta Tau Leadership Endowment Fund with an initial donation of $60,000 to the Jewish Foundation this summer. The new endowment ensures that annual contributions to Shalom Austin and to Texas Hillel will be made in Marilyn’s name in perpetuity.

“Marilyn has mentored and inspired SDT sisters for more than 60 years and has made significant contributions to the Austin Jewish community,” said Randi Shade, Tau Chapter President 1987 and current Texas Sigma Delta Tau Educational Foundation President. “That’s why we thought it fitting to establish this endowment — to honor Marilyn’s leadership and legacy while also supporting two causes at the center of Jewish life in Austin and at UT.”

Randi added, “I, and countless others, have such vivid memories of reaching out to Marilyn for help and support while we were in SDT at Texas. Several of us went on to become leaders in our Jewish community as alumnae, and we owe so much of what we know to lessons we learned from Marilyn. Whether Marilyn was serving as our sorority’s advisor or as a leader of the JCC’s Early Childhood Program, Jewish Federation, Congregation Agudas Achim, or the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism National Board, we consistently watched and learned as Marilyn coupled passion and determination to get a project done with thoughtfulness and sensibility about how to get it done. We owe Marilyn a deep debt of gratitude, and as stewards of the Texas Sigma Delta Tau Educational Foundation, it is wonderful to do something that forever links Marilyn’s leadership in SDT to Shalom Austin and Texas Hillel.”

The Shalom Austin Jewish Foundation is an incredible community resource for donors and organizations, providing opportunities for convenient and efficient giving through Donor Advised Funds, and creating sustainable revenue for our community’s future through endowment funds.
