The Israeli American Council Austin’s (IAC) B’not Mitzvah program has become a cherished part of the local Jewish community over the past three years, marking a milestone in offering a distinctive journey for young women as they prepare for their Bat Mitzvah year.
This program isn’t just about standard lessons; it goes deeper, providing a space where girls can explore the diverse range of Jewish values. They learn from inspiring Jewish women from the community, gaining a richer understanding of Jewish traditions and what they mean.
At the heart of the program is the focus on connecting to the community and a sense of belonging among the participants. Engaging activities and projects, such as the popular “Roots project” where girls delve into their family histories, play a vital role. Through these experiences, the program helps them discover their place in their families, communities and the wider world.
“The impact of this program extends well beyond the girls themselves,” says Ofir Hagay Nevel, IAC’s community engagement manager. “It strengthens families and unites our entire community. Seeing those young women come together to celebrate our shared heritage is truly heartening.”
The parents of the participants in the program shared similar sentiments: “The girls’ journey through this program has been incredibly fulfilling,” one mother expressed. “It’s not just about the Bat Mitzvah ceremony; it’s about empowering girls to feel confident and proud of their Jewish identity.”
“As a parent, I cannot speak highly enough of the experience my daughter Mitzvah program. The program provided a perfect blend of education, mentorship and camaraderie. Through engaging activities and insightful discussions, the program instilled a sense of pride in our heritage and a commitment to carrying on Jewish traditions. What stood out the most was the dedication and passion of the program leaders. My daughter forged lifelong friendships and found her tribe within our tribe!”
The program caters to girls ages 11-12 preparing for their Bat Mitzvah and offers a full yearly program in both Hebrew and English. The program is committed to empowering young women, deepening their connection to their Jewish heritage and strengthening their ties to the Austin Jewish community. It serves as a platform to honor tradition, foster personal growth, and emphasize the importance of belonging. The next session will start in October.
