Austin bid farewell to an era on March 17 at GSD&M’s backyard, hosting the final iteration of Ray Benson’s legendary unofficial SXSW birthday bash. The annual event, which has been a festival staple since 2005, doubled as a momentous 75th birthday celebration for the iconic Ray Benson, founder of the eight-time Grammy-winning western swing band, Asleep at the Wheel.
The event served as a benefit for the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM), raising vital funds to support affordable healthcare for local creators. As a proud member of the Jewish community, Benson consistently puts his values into action—including the tradition of tzedakah (charity and giving back)—using his platform and milestone celebrations to support local artists and strengthen the community that keeps Austin’s music scene thriving.
Reflecting on the finality of the showcase, Benson said: “When I was asked what I wanted to do for a Birthday event in the early 2000’s, I said I wanted to play music with old friends and new ones and raise money for Austin charities. To be able to have had acts like George Strait, Willie Nelson, The Avett Brothers, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, etc. was more than I could have ever dreamed of. As a founding member of HAAM to be able to have raised over $2.5 million dollars in the history of the event exceeded my expectations. It was time to pass the torch to a new generation in the community to make sure that organizations like HAAM get the funding and attention they deserve.”
Although the curtain has closed on his annual SXSW backyard tradition, Benson’s commitment to Texas music and community advocacy continues as he currently serves on the St. David’s Foundation and Texas Cultural Trust Boards. Asleep at the Wheel will keep moving forward, with Benson continuing to bring his iconic live shows to cities and venues across the country.
