Young Jewish Professionals Austin celebrated its 10th anniversary with a gala dinner that brought hundreds of attendees together to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look toward the future of Austin’s young Jewish community.

Held on March 20 at the corner of 8th and Congress, the evening drew city officials, community leaders, and longtime members. Guests enjoyed a night of fine dining, reflection, and heartfelt speeches recognizing a decade of vibrant Jewish life in the city.

Honoring Community Leaders

The gala paid tribute to Janet and JP Newman, local philanthropists and longtime supporters of Jewish causes, for their exceptional leadership and contributions to the YJP community. Danielle Thompson, an emerging young adult leader, was also recognized for her dedication and involvement.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson addressed the crowd, praising YJP for its “energetic and inclusive approach” and for enriching the city’s cultural and spiritual life over the last decade.

A Decade of Connection

Founded in 2015 by Rabbi Mendy and Rebbetzin Mussy Levertov, YJP Austin has grown into a thriving hub for Jewish adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Its programs range from holiday celebrations and networking socials to Torah study and leadership development.

“We like to think of everyone being on a journey of Yiddishkeit,” Rabbi Levertov said, using the Yiddish term for Judaism. “There isn’t a set destination for each participant — just a movement of the Jewish needle toward more connection to G-d, Judaism, and the soul.”

Many gala guests shared personal stories of moving to Austin not knowing anyone and finding lasting friendships, professional opportunities, and a stronger sense of Jewish identity through YJP programs.

Looking Ahead

While the evening was primarily a celebration of past achievements, guests were also given a preview of YJP’s next chapter — including the forthcoming Chai House, a new dedicated space just east of downtown.

The Chai House will feature a large event hall, study and lounge areas, and flexible spaces for educational and communal use. It will host YJP programs such as Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, and Torah classes, and will also be available for rental to the wider Jewish and Austin communities.

“Our hope is that the Austin Jewish community will see this as a welcoming space to host events and programs,” Rabbi Levertov said. “We envision a dynamic, modern Judaism that invites participation from all Austinites.”

The Levertovs expressed deep gratitude to supporters for helping turn a grassroots effort into a thriving, citywide presence. “This milestone is not just about what we’ve done,” Rebbetzin Mussy said. “It’s about the foundation we’ve built for the next 10 years and beyond.” ■
