SUPPORTED CAMPER PROGRAM

JCAMPS IS YOUR PLACE TO SHINE!

At  JCamps, we believe every child deserves the chance to experience the magic of summer camp, and our Supported Camper Program is designed to make that possible! Our vision is for supported campers to share in the joy of their bunk’s activities for all, or most of the day, accompanied with flexible accommodations that foster each camper’s engagementsafety, and a sense of belonging within the camp community. We celebrate individual needs while nurturing meaningful participation, so every camper can thrive alongside their peers in a secure and supportive environment.

Supported campers are meaningfully integrated into a bunk of about 15 peers, joining in on exciting activities like swimming, arts & crafts, sports, and more—while receiving the accommodations and supports they need to thrive. From visual schedules and sensory-friendly spaces to supported participation with flexible accommodations and social-emotional support, our team works closely with families to create a summer experience that is fun, engaging, and empowering for every camper.

FAQS

How do I sign my child up for the Supported Camper Program?

On the JCamps camper application, you’ll find a question asking if your child would benefit from additional support during the camp day. By selecting “yes,” you are indicating your interest in the Supported Camper Program.

After submitting your application, Joshua Levy, the Disability & Inclusion Youth Manager, will follow up with you to learn more about your camper and discuss next steps.

Does the Supported Camper Program have additional costs?

No, there is no additional cost beyond standard camp tuition and fees for a child to participate in the Supported Camper Program.

What kind of accommodations does JCamps provide?

JCamps offers a variety of supports tailored to each camper’s needs! These may include:

  • Visual schedules
  • Sensory support
  • Timers and cues
  • Supported participation with flexible accommodations
  • Supportive breaks
  • Access to our sensory-friendly space, The Moon
  • While 1:1 and 2:1 support is limited, we strive to provide meaningful accommodations and supports to benefit all campers.
Who are the staff in the Supported Camper Program?

Our Supported Camper staff are counselors hired specifically to support our Supported Camper Program. Our Supported Camper staff are carefully matched with campers based on their experience, temperament, and educational background.

While Supported Camper staff are not therapists or licensed professionals, they receive specialized training before camp and ongoing supervision throughout the summer to ensure they provide the best possible support.

My child works with a service provider (ABA therapist, OT, SLP, etc.) during camp hours. Can they still attend JCamps?

Yes! With prior approval and a signed consent form, service providers may come to work with your child at camp, sustaining consistent support with minimal disruption to their experience. If your child needs to leave camp for services, they cn return for the remainder of the day.

If you would like your service provider to come to camp, please email Joshua Levy at [email protected]

My child doesn’t speak or uses an AAC device. Can they still attend JCamps?

Absolutely! JCamps welcomes and accommodates campers with a wide range of disabilities and communication styles. Our team will work with you before and during the summer to provide your child with the best possible camp experience.

Does my child need to perform self-care skills independently (going to the bathroom, changing clothes, feeding, etc.)?

While JCamps does not have a nurse on staff, our camp staff are trained to offer reasonable assistance with self-care tasks. Generally, campers should be potty-trained; however, we understand that accidents happen, and our staff will assist with wardrobe changes as needed.

For campers who require support with eating, we may have limitations in providing comprehensive feeding assistance, particularly for those with dysphagia or related needs. That said, we are happy to discuss your child’s specific requirements and explore how we can best support them.

To learn more about whether our Supported Camper Program is the right fit for your child, please reach out to Joshua Levy at [email protected]

What happens if my camper exhibits unsafe behavior?

Camper safety is our highest priority. We work closely with families to support each camper’s success and provide accommodations that encourage meaningful participation. However, certain behaviors, such as leaving the bunk without permission (elopement), physical aggression, or property damage, may compromise the safety of campers and staff.

In these situations, our team will:

  • Provide immediate support to help the camper de-esculate.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about the incident and next steps.
  • If necessary, arrange time away from camp or, in rare cases, removal from the program to protect the well-being of all campers.

Our goal is always to partner with families and create the safest, most inclusive environment possible.

CAN MY CAMPER BE GIVEN MEDICATION AT JCAMPS?

If your camper has medication that needs to be administered during JCamps hours, it must be sent with a Medical Authorization Form to the JCamps office. This form can be found HERE.

Medications must be sent in the original bottles with the prescribed dosage and the child’s name indicated on the label. All medications are administered by the JCamps Team. Medications will not be administered unless a form has been completed. A log is kept recording the time and dosage of medication administered. Medication and special needs must be indicated on the child’s profile and medical forms.
